Definition of Yoga
The literal translation of yoga from Sanskrit is ‘to yoke,
union or harness’. The union of yoga can be thought of as merging the mind,
body and spirit with our divine source. This scientific art was created nearly
5,000 years ago in
The yoga that is often referred to today is only a small part
of a much larger system of practices (the eight-limbs). Asanas (the third-limb)
are the physical postures that are practiced in yoga classes. The word asana is
often used interchangeably with the word yoga in the west. Yoga asanas
performed in reverence and centeredness initiate a direct route to the heart
and soul of the yoga practitioner.
Hatha yoga is a spiritual practice of becoming conscious of
our Oneness using yoga postures (asanas) and breathing techniques (pranayamas)
as the focus. Hatha is ‘ha’=sun and ‘tha’= moon. Hatha yoga is the union of
diametric opposites; male/female, up/down, left/right, hard/soft, and so on.
The spiritual guiding principles or foundation of yoga is
one of awakening. This essence of awakening is designed to aid us in remembering
and aligning with our true nature. Once in alliance with this pulsation we can
release the constraints of the mind and external clutter. Then our hearts are free to deeply open. We
become one within ourselves. From this space we can reach the supreme union: our
individual being with the One source.
