Cuenca is known for its many churches – approximately 52 – and it’s a pretty city with lots to see and appreciate. There’s a river, delightful squares, beautiful architecture and the people are, on the whole, friendly. But no-one, when writing about Cuenca, seems to mention the extreme pollution. Most of it comes from the hundreds of blue buses which rumble endlessly up and down the city streets, coughing out clouds of black smoke. It makes my throat sore just writing about it. What a pity, because Cuenca, with its near-perfect climate, is otherwise a great place to be.
Psst...a very clever friend of ours calls them the "farting blue buses of Cuenca".
