The impressive Munich Olympic Stadium, with its unique sloping roofs, is such a place. It’s where the 1972 Games took place, famous for the terrorist attacks. Two years later it staged the 1974 World Cup Final (soccer for American readers) in which West Germany, as it was then known, defeated Holland. In 1976, almost next door to the football stadium in the Olympia Halle, Muhammad Ali boxed Britain’s Richard Dunn for the world heavyweight championship.
The football stadium is no longer used. Everything has been closed down. But you can get a peak inside through the bolted fences. It still looks impressive.
More impressive, though, is the surrounding park. It’s beautifully kept and clean and winds around a lake and river, perfect for running, cycling and walking. But it’s also where locals, on bright days, come to sunbathe and walk their dogs. It’s fantastic for children, too. Zenchai zoomed around on his bike, enjoying the hills, where he could free-wheel.
The park and stadium is not far from the city centre. There are car parks. And there’s a Sea World on the grounds also, although we didn’t get time to visit.
It’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon.
