The sun was warm, I was sitting in a lawn chair soaking it up, munching on a plate of watermelon when one of the owner's of our bungalow arrived back from town. She walked across the green grass to hand me a leaflet she had picked up for us.
It was all in Spanish, so I slowly read the title and couldn't help but to give her a big smile and a 'muchas gracias'.
The leaflet is made especially for tourists about how to quickly adapt to life in San Marcos Sierras. It details twenty different ways on how to do so.
But I think they are all quite fabulous tips no matter where in the world you call home or visit.
Here they are:
- Say hello to all the people you pass in the street.
- Make it a priority to walk, use a bicycle or a horse.
- Smile for no reason.
- Throw all of your rubbish in the bins.
- Never drive your car over 30 km/h.
- Walk a lot, and at some moment of the day, barefoot.
- Enjoy the silence and the hills.
- Be gentle, simple and supportive.
- Take time to share mate with friends.
- Play with sand, with the river and children
- Direct your attitude and always think toward the positive.
- Watch the night sky and find we have many more stars than we thought.
- Breathe deeply from dawn.
- Discover new trails on the mountain.
- Camp in the indicated places.
- To eat homemade bread, honey and sweets with natural pleasure.
- Distinguish the aroma of the trees, fruits and flowers.
- Do not write against walls or river stones.
- Love things like nature made them.
- Shop around the square "to see what's new. "
The flyer finishes with this...
In short: be happy.
You think it is a utopia? Know San Marcos Sierras. And then begin to apply these rules in the place where you live. See that it is not so hard to make our city a little paradise.

It shows that happiness is a state of being -not a place or thing. x
