Also a health food store, this quant establishment doubles as a restaurant/deli in the heart of Palermo’s posh shopping district.

They’ve been in business since 1979 and have a good choice of organic produce as well as pastries and pies – we particularly liked the sweet potato and strawberry variety.

Try their soups, salads and vegetarian empanadas, too. Prices are reasonable and portions – especially the pies – large and filling. There is ample seating, mostly inside, and free wifi. Closed on Sundays. Open early until late rest of the week. Credit cards accepted for orders over £5.

Bodhi Vegetarian

For big appetites, this Chinese-run, buffet-style restaurant in Montserrat, open 11.30am-3.30pm, is the order of the day. However, we didn’t find the food as appealing as the similarly-run Spring (in Palermo Chico), even if it is cheaper.

A meal for three – with Zenchai charged half price – set us back 85 pesos (about £14), which isn’t bad. But the owners insisted we have drinks and then charged us for them, so be warned.

We saw some of the food in the buffet (usually in bowls) being microwaved, which didn’t appeal to us. On the plus side, there are labels at the buffet indicating what foods are vegan. The choice was good. There is a cold salad section (fairly large) and desserts (mostly cake and pastries, but not vegan).

Address: Chile 1763, Montserrat. Closest subway: Independencia (purple line) and Congresso (light blue). We got the green line to Callao and hiked.

 

Granix

Although it has a sizeable and comfortable seating area and plenty to offer, this lunchtime buffet restaurant on the busy Florida shopping street (No. 165) could easily be overlooked.

It’s tucked away on the first floor above the Mitre building inside a small shopping mall. Unless you knew it was there, you most likely wouldn’t notice.

But it is worth finding. Although most of the food is for vegetarians, vegans and raw foodies won’t starve. They serve rice dishes, vegetables, nice soups, bread, fruit juices and fresh salads with lots of sprouts.

You can eat in or grab a take-away. Opening times are between 11am-3pm. Prices were reasonable at 48 pesos (£8) per person. They didn’t charge for Zenchai first time we went, but did (half price) on a return visit.

There is a small shop on site, but, frankly, it doesn’t offer a great deal.

 

Habibi

This Arab restaurant in San Telmo (not far from the market – Humberto Primo 517) offers some excellent falafel sandwiches and at good prices. We bought three for 78 pesos (£13). They were filling and tasty, though humus or tahini has to be requested (and for an additional charge).

The standard falafel sandwich comes with lettuce and tomato. There are other vegan options on the menu. Service can be a little (actually very) slow, but the food is good. Eat in or take away. www.habibiresto.com

Shawarma

Another place offering the falafel sandwich option, situated at 5328 Honduras in Palermo. Service here is much quicker and the sandwiches tastier. You get to choose your ingredients - this can be tahini, lettuce, tomatoes and various sauces. The price is better, too. We purchased three falafel sandwiches for only 51 pesos (less than £10).
