I HAVE already mentioned my love for the shopping potential here in India. So many beautiful things. Yes, I am accutely aware of how 'things' aren't pratical or needed for the traveller (or anyone for that matter), but did I mention how gorgoeus 'things' are here?
One little shop in Varkala Beach repeatedly caught my eye. The items were somehow different than the rest.
I struck up a conversation with the owner, Ganesh (below), a young twenty-something from Rajistan. He taught himself how to sew and design clothes when he was 18 to try to overcome the poverty and hard life of farming, his father's struggling profession.
Ganesh began small, hand sewing all his own garments. Obviously talented, his clothing has become quite popular with tourists. He not only has a shop in Varkala Beach, but also one in Gokarna, Goa, which he employs his brother to run.
Knowing Ganesh's story helped to make me feel less guilty about accruing more things. After all, did I tell you how pretty and affordable they are?
